Anyways, I found the amount of time researching through hard to navigate sites and wiring diagrams wasn't worth it. I terminated all OEM wires and ran my own. The other issue is the wiring from the amp to the speaker. The wiring going to the speaker could be damaged. Check the connector at the speaker. Btw, E46s with the HK system use capacitors to filter the full range audio signal. Non-HK E46s have crossovers built into the amp.
Use a Line Out Converter that will accept a Differential Balanced output and convert it to a low level RCA/Phono input, which is what most amps will accept. HERE is an example of a good LOC. 2. Use an amplifier that will accept a Differential Balanced input directly. There are a few that will accept this type of input.

The BMW speakers, with floppy paper cones pumping against stiff foam surrounds, seem to create far more blaring, muted midranges in comparison. The Goldwoods lift vocals right up out of the music. Quieter program power. The Goldwoods are 4 ohm speakers, while the Alpine amp expects 2 ohm loads and the Harman Kardon expects 3 ohms.
I assume you have an amplifier. If so, you need to remove the oem amp and speakers at the same time. This leaves you with 3 options: 1. new head unit + new speakers (power the speakers from the new head unit) 2. OEM head unit + aftermarket amp + aftermarket speakers. 3. Option 1 + aftermarket amp.
